On Friday, September 28, 2018, Prof. Anita Hill joined us in Houston to speak at the 2018 Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC 18). Anita discussed the controversy surrounding Brett Kavanaugh, who was recently sworn in as Supreme Court Justice despite Christine Blasey Ford’s accusations of sexual assault. Anita also spoke about her own experience when she accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in 1991, only for him to likewise be confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice.
“You may not have a choice about what they do,” Anita said of the U.S. Senate. “But you do have a choice about what you do.” She encouraged everyone to make their voices heard by voting, working with allies, and telling their stories. She also praised the #MeToo movement for bringing stories of sexual harassment to light, as well as events like GHC where women’s voices are valued.
Many news reporters covered Anita’s inspiring featured session, including those from ABC13 KTRK, Houston Chronicle, New York Times, NBC KPRC, and more. Here are some of our favorite quotes from the media. Be sure to check out all the other GHC news coverage as well.
“The event’s goal of making tech a space that welcomes women and minorities has a particular resonance this year following the rise of the #MeToo movement, which has already toppled prominent figures in media, entertainment and politics. The Grace Hopper Celebration wants its attendees to know they’re not alone and they’re not without power.”

“‘I feel empowered,’ said Apoorva Govind, a software engineer in San Francisco, after hearing Hill’s remarks. ‘I don’t feel as hopeless as after yesterday’s news.’
“Nikole Phillips, a data analytics professional in Austin, had registered for Hill’s session well before the recent news cycle. She remembers watching her testimony as a teenager and recalled how Hill kept pushing forward despite the ‘venom and attacks.'”

“It’s a full-circle moment, then, to have Hill in town at this particular point in time — at a gathering born out of a desire to raise up women’s voices, no less.”
