BRAID: Encouraging Women to Code

While female computer science majors are a minority in most colleges, 55 percent of Harvey Mudd College’s latest class of computer science graduates were women. The secret behind reaching such a high percentage is simple: create an fun and inclusive environment. Students at Harvey Mudd work together on coding projects, and some female students are sent to the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) to further encourage them to stay in the field. Hoping to help other colleges increase computer science diversity, AnitaB.org and Harvey Mudd created BRAID (Building, Recruiting and Inclusion for Diversity), an initiative which finds ways to make coding more appealing to women.
