Despite recent stories like Susan Fowler’s blog or movements like #MeToo, many experts feel sexual harassment is underreported in India’s tech industry. Since the Indian tech industry is heavily male-dominated, women technologists feel unsupported in the workplace, and find it difficult to come forward when they face harassment.
“You can be ambitious, you can have your husband’s/family’s support, but the challenge will be the society,” said Geetha Kannan, Managing Director of AnitaB.org India. “And being a community-driven culture, I think it will take a longer time for us to go beyond this.”
So just how does the Indian tech industry overcome this challenge? Geetha explained that the key is fixing the leaky pipeline. “When there are more women participating in the workforce, the organizations themselves will work towards having family-friendly policies.”
