The 2018 U.S. midterms saw numerous women of diverse backgrounds elected into positions of political power, and also saw some historic firsts. Two Muslim women — Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib — and two Native American women — Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids — were elected to Congress, while Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Abby Finkenauer became Congress’s youngest elected women. Despite this victory for diversity, the question remains: When will the tech world improve its own diversity numbers?
Our 2017 Insights Report for the Top Companies for Women Technologists program showed that women made up only 28% of entry level technical roles. Representation was even lower at the upper levels, with women making up 23%, 19%, and 15% of mid, senior, and executive level roles, respectively. Although our 2018 Insights Report showed that the number of women in executive roles grew by 2.1%, it also showed that women from underrepresented groups only make up around 13% of the technical workforce.
If real progress is to be made, whether in the political world or the tech world, we need to have leaders with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and view points. Studies show that diversity increases innovation and productivity, and that diverse teams are better at solving problems. Hopefully, we will soon have more women in leadership roles who will both change the course of history and serve as role models for the next generation of young girls.
