Computer Games Contributed to Gender Gap

The percentage of female computer science majors began to decrease during the mid-1980s, dropping from 37% in 1984 to 18% in 2016. While many factors contributed to this phenomenon, one of the most prominent factors was the gaming industry. “A lot of early computers were used for game playing,” said Elizabeth Ames, senior vice president of marketing, alliances, and programs at “Those games tended to be more aimed more at boys and men, so it was easy for boys to get a leg up in that area through gaming.”
