HR Comes Last in Startups and Women Pay the Price

When building their own tech startups, founders often neglect a very important department: human resources. The lack of HR means that the women technologists they hire will more likely face sexual harassment and will less likely be promoted due to gender bias. Elizabeth Ames,’s SVP of Marketing, Alliances and Programs, told Motherboard, “There is a tremendous amount of bias [against women] in promotion practices. When you have organizational structures and policies that are not very well defined, those are incredible opportunities for that bias to come through.”
