Spring 2014 Systers Pass It On Award Winner
Born and raised in Nepal, Chandani Shrestha always dreamed of being a voice for gender equality in her country. After completing her high school A Levels, Chandani pursued her undergraduate degree in computer science on a full scholarship at Benedict College in the US. Though far from home, she still yearned to improve living standards for women in her community. She created the project KM Computing for Girls to provide orphan girls the opportunity to become comfortable with technology through tutoring. Chandani says conferences like Grace Hopper Celebration inspire her to use her love for computing to empower girls in Nepalese society, but credits her true motivation to her mother.
Currently, Chandani is a junior majoring in Computer Science at Benedict College, Columbia, and SC. She is a student leader and peer tutor, providing academic help to fellow students. As a Service Learning Scholar, Chandani has been on the president’s list at her school for three years. She was elected secretary of International Students’ Association in 2012 and participates on her school’s HONDA varsity team, a national level trivia challenge. Chandani expects to continue her studies and research interests in graduate school after she graduates in 2015.
