Fall 2014 Systers Pass It On Award Winner

Farzana R., PhD, is an assistant professor at James Madison University in Virginia. She is actively working for the recruitment and retention of female students in STEM and Computer Science Discipline. She has been part of a team at JMU revamping the CS1 course to broaden participation of female students in CS. She has been participating in Grace Hopper Conferences for last 4 years and have been giving talks on diversity in CS issues. She has also lead BOF sessions at SCM SIGCSE 2013 and Southeast Women in Computing Conference 2013. She is currently one of the organizing members of Capital Region Celebration of Women in Computing Conference (CapWic) at Richmond, VA. She is also the Faulty Co-Adviser of Women in Technology (WIT) club at JMU.

Farzana has also organized many workshops to teach visual programming language like Scratch, Alice and AppInventor to high school and middle school kids a part of JMU’s outreach initiatives. She currently serves as a judge for First Lego League and also facilitates programming sessions during regional FLL. She has also developed curriculum for a one day CS outreach for middle school students which is delivered each year during DIGITAL event by the JMU undergraduate female students. As part of her CS Education initiatives, she has also been training high school teachers with Computer Science fundamentals knowledge so they can offer introductory computer science courses at their own schools. She has recently started an all women chapter in Bangladesh named Bangladeshi Women in Computer Science (BWCSE) that brings together all the computer scientists from Bangladesh giving them a platform to share their experiences and supporting each other’s initiatives.
