Fall 2012 Systers Pass It On Award Winners
The Akirachix Training Program fulfills AkiraChix’s mission to inspire and develop a successful force of African women in technology. Members teach courses that are tailor made for the current market, including programming (web and mobile), web design and general entrepreneurship.
AkiraChix targets young women from socio-economically disadvantaged areas that are often lacking access to quality education and wider development opportunities. As a result, they aim to give these young women the opportunity to gain good quality education, find financial independence and escape from the cycle of poverty.
In its first year, the training program was conducted between August 2010 and August 2011 and resulted in 18 successful graduates, one of whom was male. Over the year, participants moved from very little to no exposure to technology, to being able to create software for websites and mobile devices; more importantly, the program transformed the longer term career prospects of many of the participants, from one of extremely limited skill set suited for low-paying employment options to having access to a wide range of technical jobs with growth potential.
Linda will use the award toward the AkiraChix Training program to continue inspire and encourage young African women in technology.
