ThoughtWorks Scholarship Recipient
I am a senior at DePauw University, studying Biochemistry and Computer Science. I desire to pursue a Ph.D. program in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology. My interests lie in employing machine learning, neural networks and big data analysis to explore biomedical diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Diabetes. At Université Libre de Bruxelles I created a program utilizing Feature Selection and Cooperational Game Theory, to understand important residues for function in the hydrophobic core of the Fyn Protein (involved in cell regulation). I have pioneered in related projects at MIT Lincoln Labs, Eli Lilly and Company, Vanderbilt University, and DePauw University.
Question: What inspired you to pursue computing?
Answer: “I previously felt isolated in this male dominated field, yet this conference presented many opportunities for advancement and gave me connections with women to guide me along the way. This helped shape my education and career path, and I am now a Computer Science major, specializing in Biochemistry.”
