New safety measures for the upcoming Grace Hopper Celebration were outlined in a recent interview with Bo Young Lee, President of AnitaB.org Advisory. The annual event, scheduled for October 8-11 in Philadelphia, PA, supports women and nonbinary technologists through a combination of workshops, sessions, and an expo.
Addressing the Challenges of GHC 23
GHC 23 faced significant disruptions when a number of male attendees caused overcrowding and harassment in the Expo Hall, leading to a pledge from AnitaB.org to make substantial changes immediately, and moving forward.
New Measures for GHC 24
To create a safer, more inclusive space for all attendees, AnitaB.org has introduced several key changes for GHC 24:
- Stricter Registration: Attendees will need valid ID and, if relevant, proof of student status.
- Enhanced Security: Tighter badge checks, timed expo entry groups, and improved venue security will be implemented.
- Updated Code of Conduct: A revised code of conduct will be enforced, with all participants required to agree to it during registration.
- Improved Security: Enhanced security will help manage disruptions and ensure safety.
Why Events Like GHC Matter
These changes underscore the critical need for events that support nonbinary people and women in tech. By providing safe and dedicated spaces, GHC plays a vital role in advancing careers and networking opportunities for women and nonbinary individuals in technology.
The new protocols created by AnitaB.org aim to ensure GHC 24 attendees are supported, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and professional growth.
