Highlights from GHC 24
Grace Hopper Celebration 2024 was a whirlwind of Grit, Heart, and Courage, bringing together women and nonbinary technologists from around the globe who transformed Philadelphia into a hub of inspiration. From captivating conversations to the buzzing energy on the dance floor and Expo Hall, the sense of community was electric. Whether you were grooving to the DJ’s beats, making connections at the boba meetup, or simply soaking in the camaraderie, every moment felt like a celebration of our collective power.
This year’s theme, “me + we,” embodied the spirit of standing together and lifting each other up—proving that when we unite, there’s no limit to what we can achieve. So, if you missed out, get ready for a serious case of FOMO!
What You Missed
From start to finish, GHC 24 was packed with powerful moments and insights that left attendees energized and ready to tackle the world. This wasn’t just any tech conference (just as we’ve been saying all along)—it was an intentional, soul-stirring rally for women and nonbinary people in tech who are ready to shake things up.
GHC Speakers Lit Up the Stage
The guest speakers this year delivered powerful messages that left us ready to step into our strength and courage. In one memorable talk, we heard about the importance of breaking free from the limitations we impose on ourselves—like elephants who, even when unchained, can still believe they’re held back. The message was clear: we’re often stronger than we think, and it’s time to challenge those mental barriers and push forward.
Another of our speakers inspired us to show up boldly and live out loud. They reminded us that life is about embracing our unique journeys, taking big risks, and refusing to be silenced. We’re here to make an impact on our own terms. And in a powerful discussion on connection, we were reminded that we’re wired for community—supporting each other and investing in each other’s growth is how we move forward, together.
Each of these speakers called us to action, to confront the narratives that try to limit us, and to step fully into our worth. They reminded us that we belong here, and that we have a responsibility not just to ourselves, but to those around us.
The Power of Community and Connection
One of the most unforgettable aspects of GHC 24 was the powerful sense of community and connection. Whether it was bonding over boba at the massive meetup, diving into dance circles, or grabbing a classic Philly cheesesteak, every moment was filled with laughter, conversation, and shared excitement. And let’s not forget those serendipitous encounters—like meeting someone you’ve known online for years, finally connecting face-to-face and realizing you’ve both traveled across the country to be here.
This year’s networking events took it to a whole new level. The receptions were nothing short of legendary, from the Early Career Reception to the Celebrating LGBTQIA+ Technologists Reception and Celebrating Black Technologists Reception. Each gathering was a testament to the diversity and strength of our community, where attendees were able to find their people, share their stories, and forge new connections.
And the fun didn’t stop there! The Grand Hall was buzzing with excitement all week, offering everything from a 360 Video Booth—perfect for capturing your favorite moments in high definition—to a heartfelt Compliment Wall, where attendees spread the love by sharing and exchanging uplifting notes. These activations helped us all create lasting memories and meaningful connections to last a lifetime.
Breakout Sessions & Workshops that Set the Tone
The breakout sessions and workshops pushed boundaries, with highlights like “Can I Cry at Work? And Other Advice From a Modern Mentor” and “You’re Not Alone: Finding Community as a Neurodivergent Woman in Tech.” Each one brought bold conversations to the forefront, touching on everything from personal resilience to the importance of authentic community.
In one of the Live Studio sessions, we sat down with U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm, who gave a thrilling glimpse into the future of clean energy tech and the role of entrepreneurs in combating climate change. “Success is the best revenge!” she declared, inspiring us to push for impactful, innovative solutions. Following that, Amanda “Mandy” Ralston, founder and CEO of NonBinary Solutions, captivated us with insights on neurodiversity advocacy. She broke down the “curb cut effect,” showing how adaptations intended for one group can benefit everyone.
In our more technical workshops like “Data Stream Builders: Interactive Pipeline Design Workshop” and “Mastering Cloud Security Environments: Workshop for Experienced Developers”, attendees were able to have hands-on time learning how to use different software, putting their heads together on code, and understanding how to make the internet more accessible for everyone.
With every guest speaker, session, and conversation, GHC 24 ignited a spark that we’ll carry forward in our own journeys. We wish we could’ve attended every single one, but we’re lucky to have a community that shared their experiences, so together, we could savor every moment!
Your Representation Matters
Walking into a space filled with women and nonbinary technologists from all over the world was a moment that left many of us breathless. Seeing so many together in one room was a vivid reminder that we belong in this field. We’re here to stay, to innovate, and to lead. The sense of representation was palpable, and for many, it was emotional—there’s nothing quite like being surrounded by people who look like you, share your experiences, and understand your journey.
Every conversation was a reminder of our shared purpose and the incredible things we can achieve together. There’s an undeniable strength in numbers, and at GHC 24, that strength was on full display. If you were there, you know the feeling. And if you missed it, rest assured, this community is only growing stronger. So keep an eye out—there’s more to come, and we’re just getting started.
