Priyal Padheriya’s Story of Growth, Giving Back, and the Impact of AnitaB.org

“AnitaB.org and Grace Hopper Celebration didn’t just help me build my career – they empowered me to dream bigger and embrace my unique journey in tech.”

These words from Priyal Padheriya showcase her journey from an international student navigating the challenges of a new country to a tech leader, mentor, and advocate for diversity and inclusion. Priyal’s story reflects the power of community, mentorship, and paying it forward—values deeply rooted in the AnitaB.org mission.

How Did Priyal Get Her Foot in the Door?

Priyal’s tech journey began with a determination to attend her first Grace Hopper Celebration in 2022. As a newly arrived international student, she had heard about the impact of this event but had no idea how pivotal it would be.

“That first conference was a whirlwind,” Priyal recalls. “But as I started engaging with recruiters, participating in interviews, and soaking in the energy of the event, I realized my potential. I even found my mentor there, someone who continues to guide me to this day.”

This gathering of like-minded women in technology boosted Priyal’s confidence, and she experienced a butterfly effect of success. She landed internships, gained recognition as an Arizona State University Global Citizen Award recipient, and was featured on LeapScholar’s Inspiring Journeys series and in Times Square. By the time she graduated, Priyal had secured a senior-level role in tech, defying a challenging job market—no doubt because of the consistent work she’d put in.

Embracing the Community with Membership and Mentorship

The AnitaB.org Quarterly Mentorship Cohort and Mentoring Circles became cornerstones of Priyal’s growth. Starting as a Mentee, she absorbed lessons from industry leaders and peers. Later, she transitioned to becoming a Mentor herself.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to support others while continuing to learn and grow myself,” Priyal shares. She even returned to do a presentation on “Finding Professional Confidence at Any Career Level”, illustrating how far she had come.

These contributions reflect Priyal’s genuine commitment to paying it forward in real life. By mentoring over 500 international students on networking in the US and hosting free, sold-out webinars like “Navigating GHC 23: An Interactive Q&A Session”, she has solidified herself as a leader and beacon for aspiring technologists.

Living Her Values and Growing Through Challenges

That’s all to say, Priyal’s time in tech has not been a walk in the park; resilience has been a hallmark of her journey. When her summer internship was rescinded just a month before its start, she refused to give up. “I leaned into the challenge and worked tirelessly to find a new opportunity.” she explains. “By the time summer arrived, I had secured another internship…that experience taught me that determination and adaptability can turn even the most difficult situations around.”

Priyal’s values—honesty, respect, and paying it forward—are the foundation of her decision-making. “Living my values means more than just sticking to the beliefs I hold – it’s about constantly evaluating my actions and decisions through the lens of what I stand for.” she says. “I think it’s through these small acts of kindness and generosity that we create a ripple effect of positive change in the world.”

The Need for Representation and DEI in Tech

Representation is a way of life for Priyal. Reflecting on her undergraduate studies, where women made up only a fraction of her computer science class, she recognizes the barriers many face.

“Representation goes beyond simply hiring; it’s about providing equal pay, opportunities for growth, and a seat at the decision-making table.” Priyal says.

Priyal’s message to women, particularly those from underrepresented communities entering tech, is a call to action: “You’re already one step ahead just by taking that first step.” She emphasizes that what sets you apart is your unique perspective—your power to innovate lies in your differences.

“Make the most of every opportunity—networking events, mentorship programs, even just asking questions,” Priyal advises. “Tech is always evolving, and a growth mindset will help you thrive.”

Quoting Sheryl Sandberg, Priyal reminds others, “In the future, there will be no female leaders. There will just be leaders.” It’s a sentiment that fuels her own journey and reflects her belief that gender or background should never limit one’s ability to lead, innovate, and leave a lasting impact. And a reminder that one day, women leadership will just be leadership.

Priyal’s vision for the future extends beyond her own success; she’s driven to create a tech industry where everyone can get their foot in the door. Through mentorship, advocacy, and leadership, she’s on a roll inspiring others to break barriers and embrace their unique perspectives.

“Success is more meaningful when shared,” Priyal reflects. Her ultimate goal? “To leave an impact on the tech industry by fostering inclusivity, empowering others, and paying forward the opportunities I’ve been fortunate to receive.”
