Awards Celebrate Women In Computing Who Demonstrate Social Impact, Innovation and Leadership
PALO ALTO, CA, — November 5, 2013 – AnitaB.org, a non-profit organization focused on the advancement of women in computing, announced today it has officially opened nominations for the ninth Women of Vision (WOV) ABIE Awards which honor women making significant contributions to technology in three categories: Innovation, Leadership, and Social Impact. High-tech companies, universities, private industry, and the general public are eligible to submit nominees for the WOV ABIE awards. Nominations will be accepted until December 21, 2013. Nominations can be submitted at http://anitaborginstitute.org/initiatives/women-of-vision. The Awards will be presented on May 8, 2014, at a dinner banquet celebration in Santa Clara, California.
The WOV Innovation ABIE Award recognizes a woman who has contributed significantly to technology innovation. The innovation could include creating unusual and important technology or a unique approach to developing technology in a significantly new and innovative way, such as by bringing diverse people and experiences together in the technology creation process.
The Social Impact ABIE Award recognizes a woman who developed or applied technology with a significant impact on society and/or the community. Previous Social Impact Award winners are women who have created or employed technologies that have changed our world in positive ways.
The Leadership ABIE Award recognizes a woman who is a leader of a significant technical organization, has led an important technology development or innovation, made a significant contribution to the technology industry, and is someone who inspires others. Women recognized have included the leader of a team of computer scientists, interaction designers, human factors engineers and social scientists who has fundamentally altered the way products are designed so that they are centered on people’s needs, the first female fellow at a major technology company, and the Chair of the Mozilla Foundation, who organized and motivated a massive, worldwide collective of employees and volunteers to launch the Firefox browser.
“AnitaB.org Women of Vision ABIE Awards showcase these great women making extraordinary contributions to technology in areas that are often overlooked but need to be recognized and appreciated,” said Telle Whitney, President and CEO. “Recipients of these awards are women who push boundaries in technology, invigorate other women technologists and inspire the rest of us to drive forward and make a lasting impact.”
Last year’s winners include Genevieve Bell, Director, Interaction and Experience Research, Intel Labs at Intel Corporation for Leadership; Vicki Hanson, Professor of Inclusive Technologies at the University of Dundee, and Research Staff Member Emeritus from IBM Research for Social Impact; and Maja Matarić, Professor and Chan Soon-Shiong Chair in Computer Science, Neuroscience and Pediatrics, Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Southern California for Innovation.
