GEICO Tackles Diversity Issues from Multiple Angles

AnitaB.org is proud to offer Top Companies for Women Technologists, a national program to recognize organizations building workplaces where women technologists can thrive. In 2017, we evaluated 63 companies, accounting for a workforce of more than 574,000 technologists. Top Companies is the only program that provides a consistent benchmark of the technical workforce across a wide range of industries.

We’ve expanded Top Companies this year from a single award to four, in order to better reward companies making a commitment to women in the technical workforce. In addition to three awards based on technical workforce size — less than 1,000 employees, 1,000 to 10,000 employees, and more than 10,000 employees — this year we introduced a new Momentum award, recognizing a company that showed a significant growth in women technologists in senior and executive roles.

At the 2017 Grace Hopper Celebration, national insurance brand GEICO took top honors among companies with a technical workforce between 1,000 and 10,000 employees.

“We are deeply honored to be recognized by AnitaB.org, in support of the organization’s strategic mission to lead the charge for the growth of women technologists in the workplace,” said Marie Motowylak, the organization’s Director of Decision Sciences and Business Transformation. “GEICO has always made diversity a top priority by promoting an all-inclusive environment that emphasizes leadership, training, and career-advancing roles for women in IT. It’s important that we continue to create these opportunities that lead to successful and rewarding career paths.”

Marie cites multiple key attributes that help GEICO succeed in promoting and retaining women technologists:

  • The company provides a good mix of rotational programs for entry-level technologists and management-track IT squad members with ongoing training on a career path for continued professional growth.
  • Motivated IT professionals are given opportunities to tackle an abundance of engaging projects in a broad scope of roles and responsibilities.
  • The company hosts a number of monthly professional development certification classes and user groups that go beyond basic training and provide a wide measurement of knowledge and skills assessment.
  • The company embraces a promote-from-within culture in a conducive environment where IT professionals can grow and be successful.

We’re proud to recognize GEICO’s leadership in supporting women technologists, and to help the company quantify its progress toward a more equitable workplace.
