When it comes to the lack of women in the tech field, many company leaders are quick to blame to leaky pipeline. However, the diversity problem goes much deeper than the pipeline problem. Women are leaving the tech field at a rapid pace due to toxic work environments, lack of promotion, unequal pay, and many other reasons.
“The tech industry’s ‘pipeline problem’ smokescreen prevents us from addressing the true roots of this failure,” writes Brenda Darden Wilkerson, President and CEO of AnitaB.org. “Rather than blaming the pipeline, leaders need to work harder to create better environments that encourage women to stay.”
