In the ever-evolving landscape of the tech industry, the push for a more inclusive and equitable environment has never been more crucial. In collaboration with Endaoment, and further supported by Gitcoin’s innovative quadratic funding algorithm, AnitaB.org can benefit from emerging technologies that aim to transform philanthropy. This synergistic effort aims to create a fairer, more innovative, and impactful tech ecosystem. Here’s how we’re doing it.
Understanding the Landscape of Equity in Philanthropy
As the tech industry continues to grow, so too do the disparities in opportunity, representation, and funding. Historical biases have funneled resources towards a narrow demographic, leaving a diverse pool of talent struggling for recognition and support.
Philanthropic Inequity by Intersectionality: Gender
Fast Company reports nonprofits battling women-specific issues receive just 1.6% of all charitable funding, with 90% of that going to reproductive justice.
Philanthropic Inequity by Intersectionality: Race
The funding gap between White-led and Black-led non-profit organizations is stark. In 2019, of the money donated by Americans in the philanthropy, only 4% went to Black, Indigenous, or Latinx-led NPOs.4 This means that even less than 4% was donated to organizations led by Black, Indigenous, or Latinx women.
Philanthropic Inequity by Intersectionality: Sexual Orientation
LGBTQ+ nonprofit organizations received less than 1% of all charitable donations nationwide, as reported by the IUPUI Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.
This situation is particularly dire for individuals and organizations working outside the traditional mold—women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community face significant obstacles in gaining the support necessary to make their mark in tech.
Philanthropy offers a beacon of hope in addressing these inequities. By funding organizations and initiatives that aim to level the playing field, such as the AnitaB.org Apprenticeship Pathway Program, we can begin to dismantle these barriers. However, the challenge is vast, and the need for innovative solutions is clear.
The Power of Endaoment + Gitcoin: Democratizing Philanthropy
Enter Endaoment and Gitcoin, two platforms at the forefront of technological philanthropy. Endaoment acts as a bridge, enabling donations of digital assets, such as cryptocurrency and NFTs, to nonprofits. Since its inception, it has facilitated over $80 million in donations, demonstrating the power of onchain donations to support global causes.
Gitcoin’s Quadratic Funding model, originated from the ideas of Glenn Weyl and Vitalik Vuterin, introduces a democratic way to distribute funds, emphasizing the number of donations over the size of each. This method ensures a more equitable distribution of resources, allowing smaller contributions to have a significant impact.
Endoament’s Universal Impact Pool (UIP), built in partnership with Gitcoin’s Allo Protocol and using the aforementioned quadratic funding model, algorithmically amplifies all donation activity with quarterly grants to every recipient organization. While traditional matching funds have long been used as a tool to incentivize donor contributions, they often only amplify the largest of donations. This innovative algorithm flips this concept on its head by weighting the number of donations an organization has received over the total amount, for a more equitable distribution of funds.
The UIP provides a clear incentive for donors to maximize their generosity for their favorite nonprofits, and for those organizations to direct their donor base to Endaoment. For example, AnitaB.org has been granted over $272,000 on the platform from individual donors in the crypto community, including multiple donations from Generative Artists and two grants from the UIP.
“We hope to see many more real-world use cases deploying Allo as effectively as the Universal Impact Pool, producing funding and resource distribution tools via progressive decentralization and a plurality of funding mechanisms,” says Caolan Walsh, Communications Manager at Gitcoin.
Together, Endaoment and Gitcoin showcase how emerging technologies can make philanthropy more transparent, efficient, and community-driven. As these platforms continue to evolve, they have the potential to unlock unprecedented generosity and shape the future of giving.
Bridging the Gap: From Philanthropy to a More Equitable Tech Industry
The impact of these donations is already being felt. Through AnitaB.org initiatives, individuals from historically excluded backgrounds are finding their footing in the tech industry. Success stories, like those emerging from the Apprenticeship Pathway Program, highlight the transformative power of community support, technical training, and career development opportunities.
When you donate to AnitaB.org, you support 106K+ members receiving programming and training, on demand content, mentorship, open-source opportunities, community building, and volunteer opportunities. You also support our work to address leadership advancement, inclusive representation, economic mobility and pay parity.
As we look to the future, the role of continued philanthropy in advancing equity in tech cannot be overstated. The potential for technology and philanthropy to work hand in hand in driving change is immense, and the work of AnitaB.org, Endaoment, and Gitcoin illustrates a path forward.
